Textiles

Textiles Technology encompasses many basic life skills that are lost in the modern world. It is a popular subject both at KS3 and KS4. The aim of the department is to provide high quality teaching and to enthuse and motivate pupils. They learn, understand and apply practical skills to develop their creativity as well as gaining theoretical knowledge.
Year 7 pupils learn basic hand sewing stitches including sewing on buttons. They also make a bean bag of which they are very proud.
Year 8 pupils develop their hand sewing skills and progress to learning to use a sewing machine. They also discover the symbols and artefacts of other cultures and apply this to making a cushion; which often they treasure for many years.
Year 9 the pupils are introduced to the industrial world of Textiles and Manufacturing. They become aware of Mass Production in this country and around the world. They learn to use a specification to design and make for a client. The pupils take an entry level certificate at the end of their course which gives them a recognised qualification with the Edexcel examination board.
GCSE Textiles Technology is a popular option subject. Pupils follow the Edexcel syllabus 5TT01-coursework 60% and 5TT01 exam 40%. They work through two modules; Application of Colour onto Fabric and Fashion and Manufacturing. The coursework consists of a made item of their choice and design and an A3 portfolio of work. Completed work is on display in the corridors and we are proud of the pupils that have produced this work.
We have a well stocked room with new sewing machines, computer aided embroidery machines as well as twenty new laptops and five free standing computers.
