Resistant Materials

In Resistant Materials we encourage the students to think “outside” the box and design products that are both innovative and creative.
Throughout KS3 the students use a wide variety of materials, (wood, manufactured board, Acrylic, metal), to fulfil their design proposals. They are taught about their properties, their suitability for specific manufacturing tasks and how to shape and form those materials in a variety of ways. Whilst hand skills are given a high priority we also have CAD (computer aided design) programmes and a variety of CAM (computer aided manufacture) facilities.
The students are also taught how to finish their products to a high standard ~ no rushing ~ but sanding and varnishing/staining/painting, until the surfaces are smooth and even.
At KS4 Resistant Materials is a popular subject for GCSE. At Passmores we use the AQA exam board. The students refresh their skills in year 10 and go on to produce an A3 design portfolio that supports their final product. The time, skill, and effort that is put in by the students to produce a product that is finished to a high, professional standard is usually rewarded with excellent final grades.
