RE

Students working in a classroom at Passmores School and Technology College

“Why do I have to take RE? I don’t want to be a vicar or a nun!”

Sounds familiar.

RE teachers in the past will certainly recognise the question, when Religious Education consisted solely of teaching about Christianity.

We at Passmores do our utmost to celebrate religious, cultural and social diversity and to encourage understanding and tolerance towards those whose faiths and beliefs differ from our own. We recognise that the majority of the world’s population belongs to one of the 6 major World Religions – Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism – and that they all have so much to teach us about commitment, spirituality and care and concern for others.

Teaching religion is a huge challenge in a world where everything sometimes seems to be so chaotic and where there are more questions than answers. So, we try to tackle some of the key questions about what it means to be a Christian, a Muslim, a Jew, a Hindu, a Buddhist or a Sikh in an ever-changing world. We encourage students to explore and develop their own beliefs and to be tolerant and open-minded about the beliefs and practises of others.
