Food

The Food Technology and Catering departments are dedicated to providing students with a broad range of food related knowledge and skills. As well as designing and creating new products, we are committed to ensure that all students have basic food handling skills and a thorough knowledge of food hygiene and safety.
Food Technology and Catering are both popular subjects at Passmores and students are highly motivated in lessons and therefore make excellent progress, regardless of ability.
Our enthusiastic teaching team not only provides excellent education but also afterschool clubs and trips. Trips include ‘The Good Food Show’ in Birmingham, for Year 9 and Key Stage 4 students, and the ‘Ready Steady Cook’ studio in London. For the first time this year we are very excited to offer an overseas trip to Italy in May.
Food Technology is taught in key stage 3 and Catering in Key Stage 4.
In Year 7 students study Food Hygiene and Safety, Bread and Pastries, Nutrition and Healthy Eating. Throughout the year students build up a basic level of cooking skills and make the products they have design for themselves.
In Year 8 students investigate Properties of ingredients, Production methods and Cook-Chill meals. The students also make and design food products for their peers which develop their cooking skills.
In Year 9 students begin the year with a cultural research project then move on to a more detailed hygiene and safety unit, finishing off the year with a study of vegetarianism. Students attempt more advanced recipes.
At GCSE, students study the Welsh Board Catering specification. Topics include ‘The Catering Industry’, ‘Nutrition and Menu Planning’, ’Food production’ and ‘Technological developments’.
The coursework includes two practical assignments and one project.
